Five minutes with Michael + Carlene Duffy

Cedar and Suede Concrete Nation Interior Styling Michael and Carlene Duffy Renovation The Block

They shot to fame as contestants on Channel Nine’s The Block however Michael and Carlene Duffy have proven their talent for interior design and home renovation extends far beyond a reality television show. The Gold Coast couple run Cedar and Suede, an interior styling company and are also filming their current renovation for a new show called Ready Set Reno on 9Life. Concrete Nation took five with the talented duo to chat trends, their current projects and their design tips.

What would you say is your signature style?

Warm, layered, eclectic and a good mix of old and new.

What are some current trends in interior design/home renovations right now?

There is a strong movement in incorporating classical design into modern architecture and design. Things like VJ wall panelling, shaker-style cabinetry, velvet, plush furnishings and aged brass help to soften modern schemes.

What have been some of your favourite projects to date?

We just completed our long-awaited renovation of our own forever home, which has been fun because the only people I've had to please is us.

Do you have any styling tips/hacks you swear by?

Rugs under beds are a must, whether you have carpet or not. They help anchor the bed and add colour and texture to the bedroom

Shop in op shops, on Gumtree and at markets for antiques and vintage items. Mixing in the old into the new is what gives your home soul.

What/who are some of your design inspirations?

Abigail Ahern, Jonathon Adler and Kelly Wearstler for their bold approach to design

What are some interesting projects you’re working on?

We've been completely consumed by our own renovation which we've only just finished. Our reveal will go to air on October 8. We've also recently transformed the interior a 1920s Queenslander with fabulous clients. I've also been consulting on the fit out of a new tyre/car maintenance business to a modest budget.

Do you have any rules when it comes to interior design?

Don't get hung up on adhering to one particular style. Feel free to pull what you love from multiple styles to create interest in the home

What are your thoughts on using raw materials such as concrete in your homes?

Concrete is great for its durability and its organic look. We have polished concrete floors in our main living area with a beautiful exposed river stone aggregate and we don't have to worry about its wear because it’s indestructible. Aesthetically, however, it's important though to warm up concrete by pairing it with timber, colour and plenty of layers.
