Q&A with award-winning architect, Paul Uhlmann

Architectural Concrete Concrete Concrete Nation Design Gold Coast Paul Uhlmann Architects

We recently had the pleasure of supplying some bespoke concrete pieces for the Hill Residence on Queensland's Gold Coast. The dramatic three-level home, built by Nick McDonald from Mactech Constructions and designed by award-winning Paul Uhlmann Architects, sits on stilts which creates the illusion the home is floating above the iconic Burleigh point. We spoke to Paul about the design process, environmental and social sustainability in his homes and his new project in the Greek Islands.

What was the inspiration behind this design?

Creation of a box tilted down a hill with openings cut into it and lined with timber to give the building warmth.

How did you approach this project?

Looking at the site opportunities and council constraints, clients brief and budget and seeking a resolution of all of these elements – then creating a form that tries to deal with each of the elements in a strong way.

What were the main challenges you encountered?

The client had a very large brief that needed to be condensed onto a hillside location.

What is your favourite part of this home?

Living level and the integration of the pool through to the external deck.

How would you describe your signature style?

Regional modernism.

Are you concerned about environmental and social sustainability in your homes and buildings and, if so, what role does green building play in your work?

The fundamental design principal that architects are first taught about is to design for the environment – therefore we try to consider the environmental effects throughout our work. This gets better the more experience you have in the field.

Who inspires you?

Australian Architects Kerry Hill, John Wardle, Paul Owen and Vokes and Peters

NZ Architects, Herbst Architects.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Director of the State Architectural Awards 2015 and flying around the State visiting great projects and meeting interesting people.

Any interesting projects you’re currently working on?

A rebuild of a three-storey apartment on the Greek Island of Samos. The footprint is 7m x 2.7m.
